چکیده

High fidelity computer graphics preview and predictive displays provide substantial aid in four major space telerobotic activities: overall workspace design including viewing conditions, specific workspace analysis for given tasks in a fixed setting, operator training, and reduction of operator’s uncertainty and operation time under communication time delay conditions. Computer graphics displays are also very useful to help visualize a variety of non-visual sensor data to the operator and to provide an iconic operator interface to a number-based telerobot control system. These applications are illustrated and analyzed by examples implemented in real-time operation at the JPL Advanced Teleoperator project. A video tape recording of these displays is available.

Demonstration of a high-fidelity predictive/preview display technique for telerobotic servicing in space

-A highly effective predictive/preview display technique for telerobotic servicing in space under several seconds communication time delay has been demonstrated on a large laboratory scale in May 1993, involving the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the simulated ground control station and, 2500 miles away, the Goddard Space Flight Center as the simulated satellite servicing set-up. The technique is...

Experimental Head-Up Display for Space Telerobotics

Space telerobotics take place in a perceptionally highly demanding and unintuitive environment, which is characterized by a distinct lack of natural references regarding position, velocity and orientation. In the fields of aviation and terrestrial telerobotics, the operator is traditionally provided with attitude information in a Head-Up Display (HUD). This paper describes the design and the im...

Haptic Rendering: Introductory Concepts

In the last decade we have seen an enormous increase in interest in the science of haptics. The quest for better understanding and use of haptic abilities (both human and non-human) has manifested itself in heightened activity in disciplines broadly ranging from robotics and telerobotics, to computational geometry and computer graphics, to psychophysics, cognitive science and the neurosciences.

Advanced Teleoperation Technology

The capability to remotely, robotically perform space assembly, inspection, servicing, and science functions would rapidly expand our presence in space, and the cost efficiency of being there. There is thus considerable interest in developing "telerobotic" technologies, which also have comparably important terrestrial applications to health care, underwater salvage, nuclear waste remediation an...
